Plans for a 120,000 sq ft office block and landmark 193- bedroom hotel in Cork have been appealed to An Bord Pleanala.
Permission for the development being undertaken by BAM was provisionally granted by Cork City Council in November.
BAM intends to develop the project on the site of a former Revenue Commissioner’s premises on Sullivan’s Quay. The hotel will feature a 12-storey cylindrical tower.
Among the submissions received regarding the proposed development was one from Deirdre Condon. She owns The Arch building beside the planned hotel, and the property is operated as a Griffith College premises.
She demanded assurances last summer that the on-going operation of the college would not be impacted by either the development works or the operation of the hotel.
She has now appealed the decision to grant permission for the development to An Bord Pleanala. The planning watchdog will make a determination regarding the development in coming months.
BAM Property has previously indicated that it has secured a premium hotel brand to operate the new premises, which will be one of Cork’s largest hotels when it’s constructed.
There have been plans for a hotel on the Sullivan Quay site for a number of years, but they were shelved during the downturn.
A number of hotel projects are underway in Cork. Ireland’s biggest hotel group, Dalata, has recently embarked on the construction of a 164-room Maldron Hotel at South Mall in the city.
Kerry-born developers Kevin and Donal O’Sullivan are vying to build an up to 40-storey building in Cork’s docklands that would include a hotel, offices and possibly apartments.
There are also plans for a floating hotel, which would see a ship moored at Penrose Quay.
There are currently just under 3,000 rooms available in the city., with the number expected to rise significantly.
