CNI Editor reports

Google has announced a €150 million investment into the expansion of its data centre operations in south county Dublin.

The move will see the creation of 400 new construction jobs in the 16 months it takes to build the new facilities at Grange Castle.

The extra capacity will allow the tech giant to scale up the amount of cloud-based services such as Gmail, Maps, and YouTube across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Google says that it has invested €1bn in capital projects in Ireland since 2003.

The search giant also claims that its data centre operations have contributed up to 4,900 jobs in Ireland between 2011 and 2017 and “a €400m contribution to Ireland’s GDP”.

The company cited to a report by a Scandinavian consultancy, Copenhagen Economics, to back up the claims.

“This investment shows our continued commitment to Ireland as a key driver for the whole EMEA region, and we’re proud to see that total capital investment by Google in Ireland has reached a total of €1bn since we first opened an office here in Dublin fifteen years ago,” said Terence McGoff, engineering director at Google.
